Like Plato's <span style="font-style:italic;">Republic</span>, which cannot answer the question "What is Justice?" without describing the perfect society, <span style="font-style:italic;">At the Death House Door</span> begins with a seemingly simple, direct question and shows how hopelessly complicated the simplest questions can be.
